Four Wheels, Ten Great Days Out: Where Your Scooter Is Genuinely Welcome

There's a difference between "accessible" on a website and accessible in real life. A gravel car park, a "gentle slope" that's anything but, a Disabled toilet at the far end of a cobbled courtyard — we've all been caught out. So here are ten days out where your scooter is genuinely welcome, with the practical detail that matters.
1. Southport Promenade, Merseyside
Flat as a pancake, miles long, and built for exactly this. The promenade runs alongside the beach with plenty of dropped kerbs, cafés with level access and parking right alongside. Wind can pick up off the estuary, so pack a decent coat.
2. Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex
The De La Warr Pavilion sits on a smooth, level seafront with ramps into the building, accessible loos and a café with plenty of turning space. The promenade stretches east towards Galley Hill — mostly flat with one incline that's manageable for most mid-range scooters.
3. Trentham Gardens, Staffordshire
Wide, tarmac paths loop the lake, and the gardens have a good reputation among scooter users. Accessible parking is close to the entrance, and there are Changing Places facilities on site. Ring ahead about the woodland trail — the lakeside route is the safer bet in winter.
4. Llandudno, Conwy
The promenade and Mostyn Street are scooter-friendly, and the pier is level throughout. The Marine Drive around the Great Orme is stunning but hilly — only attempt it with a road-legal Class 3 scooter and a full charge. The flat town itself is plenty for a good day out.
5. Kew Gardens, London
Surprisingly good going for a historic site. Most main paths are tarmac or firm gravel, mobility scooters can be hired on site, and there are accessible toilets dotted around. Pre-book parking as it's limited, and grab the map at the gate marking step-free routes.
6. Bournemouth Seafront, Dorset
A lift from the town centre takes you down to a long, smooth promenade. Beach-access ramps are steep in places, but the prom itself is a doddle, with accessible loos and cafés at regular intervals. Watch the crowds in summer — off-season is far more pleasant.
7. St Fagans National Museum of History, Cardiff
Free entry, level parking near the entrance, and tarmac paths linking the main buildings. Some of the historic buildings have thresholds and cobbles, but you can enjoy most of the site without leaving the scooter. The café and visitor centre are excellent.
8. Rutland Water, Leicestershire
The Rutland Cycling centres hire mobility scooters and the circular routes around the reservoir include long stretches of smooth, level trail. The Whitwell stretch is a good starter. Accessible parking and toilets at each centre, and plenty of benches if you want a breather.
9. Buxton, Derbyshire
The Pavilion Gardens are a scooter user's dream — level paths, ramped access everywhere, accessible loos and a proper tearoom. The town's Crescent and Spring Gardens are manageable too, though the surrounding hills are best admired from the flat.
10. Morecambe Bay, Lancashire
The promenade along the bay is long, flat and beautifully maintained, with the Eric Morecambe statue as your photo stop. Level parking right on the front, accessible toilets along the seafront, and that big-sky view across to the Lake District.
What to Ask When You Ring Ahead
Before any trip, five quick questions save a lot of grief:
- Is parking step-free to the entrance, and how far is it?
- Are the paths tarmac or gravel, and are there steep sections?
- Is there somewhere to charge if your range is tight?
- Are the accessible toilets on the level throughout?
- Is there a weight or size limit on any lifts or ramps?
Most venues answer honestly, and staff are usually keener to help than websites suggest. If a place is worth visiting, they'll want you there.
One Last Tip
Always travel with a full charge and a bit of margin — hills, headwinds and detours all eat into range faster than you'd expect. And if your current scooter struggles with longer days out, it might be worth having a chat with us about a model with more range or better suspension. The right scooter turns "can I manage it?" into "where next?"
